Bloomingdale's Mentoring Makes a Difference: More
than 100 volunteers spend an hour each week with students
from P.S. 59 in New York to encourage, tutor, listen and talk
about the future as part of Mentoring USA, founded in 1995
by Matilda Raffia Cuomo, wife of former New York Governor
Mario Cuomo. To celebrate National Mentoring Month in
January, Michael Gould, Bloomingdale's chairman and chief
executive officer, hosted the unveiling of a mentoring window
at the 59th Street flagship store. The window, designed by the
students, was filled with paintings of the children with their
mentors. Students were given keys, inscribed with "mentoring,"
which unlocked the window.
Give Back Day - New York Encore: The Macy's, Inc. New Yorkbased
divisions have a long history of partnering with one
another to benefit the community. In September, they created
16 "Give Back Day" volunteer projects for several charities
and 400 associates volunteered. Volunteers made and served
lunches for seniors and children, painted rooms and murals,
gardened and made greeting cards. Two favorite projects for
Coalition for the Homeless, presented by senior managers,
helped with resume review and interview skills.
Macy's Honors Boys and Girls Clubs Youth of the Year: In
Seattle, Macy's Partners in Time continued its very successful
Boys and Girls Club "Youth of the Year" wardrobe sponsorship.
Volunteers shopped with the award-winning boys and girls,
many of whom have never had suits or special occasion
dresses before. This is one of the most meaningful programs
of the year - winners are often in tears, thanking Macy's from
the podium at the award ceremony.
Macy's Celebrates Martin Luther King Jr.: In Florida, Macy's
volunteers worked with their African-American employee
resource group and special events team to create five Martin
Luther King Jr. parades with 11 stores. Volunteers distributed
6,000 specially produced Martin Luther King Jr. coloring
books and multicultural crayons to the crowd.
Macy's Awesome AIDS Walk: Macy's was presenting sponsor
of AIDS Walk Boston with more than 100 walkers in striking
red Partners in Time T-shirts. The team from 11 stores walked
at the front of the crowd of 18,000 to show they, and Macy's,
care deeply about finding a cure for HIV/AIDS.
Alex's Lemonade Stand: Throughout the South, Macy's
Partners in Time volunteers joined together to create "Alex's
Lemonade Stands" in 140 stores. Associates and their children
staffed the stands and passed out drinks, raising a total of
$70,000 to fight pediatric cancer.
Volunteers Catch Spirit of Uganda: Partners in Time
volunteers had an experience of a lifetime through a project to
outfit 22 children from Uganda. The children, a musical dance
group that has twice performed at the Macy's Passport fashion
extravaganza, are part of the Spirit of Uganda fundraising
tour for AIDS orphans. At Macy's Union Square store in San
Francisco, volunteers took the children on individual shopping
sprees; many of the children arrived from Uganda with only
shorts and sandals, so shoes and coats were a must for their
U.S. tour. Afterward, volunteers enjoyed lunch with the
children, exchanged information to continue their friendship
as pen pals, and heard the children's song of thanks. When
they finished singing, there wasn't a dry eye in the room -
child or volunteer.
Macy's Junior Achievement Partnership: In St. Louis,
Partners in Time volunteers lend important support to Junior
Achievement, including the JA Evening program that runs
for 16 weeks, the JA traditional program for four intensive
weeks and the JA Bowl-a-thon fundraiser.
Hearts & Hammers and Partners: In Minneapolis, 60
volunteers worked with the Hearts & Hammers nonprofit
organization to complete an exterior makeover on the
home of a Minneapolis senior citizen. Volunteers painted,
completed minor repair work and landscaped to revitalize
this home in one day.
Support Divisions' Strong Community Commitment:
From the Macy's Credit and Customer Services "Prepare
Affair" for low-income senior housing to the four Corporate
Office United Way Community Care Day projects, thousands
of support division volunteers benefit scores of important
local charities. Here are just a few examples: At Macy's
Systems and Technology, employees partnered with the
Diversity Council to collect shoes for the "Soles for Souls"
charity. Macy's Home Store and Macy's Corporate Marketing
partnered with New York-based divisions for Give Back Day
and other efforts. Macy's Logistics and Operations associates
participated in a breast cancer fundraising walk in Portland,
TN. Macy's Merchandising Group benefited the Spanish and
Asian community with Hamilton Madison House projects
and macys.com made children's gifts with the "Giving Tree"
organization.
